LifeStraw Home | Why is my Home filter clogged or flowing slowly?Updated 2 hours ago

If your Home filter is flowing slowly or seems clogged before the end of its filtration cycle, it is usually related to care, cleaning, storage, or trapped air bubbles. It is important to keep the membrane microfilter hydrated and prevent it from drying out.

The membrane microfilter lasts up to 264 gallons, but actual filter life can vary depending on water quality, turbidity, care, and maintenance.

Steps to help restore flow

1. Rinse the membrane filter
Regular rinsing can help remove trapped debris and air pockets. We recommend rinsing the membrane filter during your weekly cleaning routine.

2. Rehydrate the filter
If the membrane filter has dried out, flow may slow down significantly. Soaking it in clean water for 30 minutes can help restore performance.

3. Deep clean if needed
If the filter has been used with cloudy water or water high in minerals, it may need a deeper cleaning.

If you have tried these steps and the filter is still not flowing properly, it may be time to replace the membrane microfilter.

How to help prevent clogging

One of the best ways to help prevent clogging is to follow the long term storage instructions below. Proper storage helps keep the membrane from drying out or becoming blocked during extended periods of non use.

Long term storage instructions

1. Empty the system
Discard any remaining water from the pitcher or dispenser.

2. Remove the carbon filter
Take out the carbon filter and let it air dry for 30 minutes.

If you plan to store your system for more than two months, we recommend discarding the used carbon filter and replacing it with a new one before using the system again.

For shorter storage, place the dry carbon filter in a sealed reusable container and store it in a cool, dry place.

3. Remove the membrane microfilter
Remove the membrane filter and rinse it under clean water.

4. Clean the pitcher or dispenser
Wash the pitcher body and filter housing with soap and water. Let everything dry completely before storing.

5. Disinfect the membrane filter
Mix 1/4 teaspoon of household bleach with 2 cups of clean water.

Place the membrane filter in this solution for 10 minutes. Then remove it and rinse thoroughly under clean water for 1 minute.

6. Prepare a salt solution
Mix 1 teaspoon of salt with 2 cups of clean water until fully dissolved.

Place the membrane microfilter in this solution and store it fully submerged in a sealed container in a cool, dry place.

7. Store filters separately
Keep the membrane filter in the salt solution. Store the dry carbon filter separately in a sealed container.

When you are ready to use it again

Remove the membrane filter from the salt solution and rinse it under clean water.

Reassemble the system with the filters in place.

Run two batches of water through the system. Discard the first batch, as it may taste salty.

If the system was stored for more than two months, use a new carbon filter.

If your filter is still flowing slowly after these steps, the membrane microfilter may need to be replaced.
