LifeStraw Go Series Waterbottle | Water bubbling up out of LifeStraw Go Series MouthpieceUpdated 2 hours ago

In some cases, you may notice bubbling, spurting, or brief pressure release when opening or using your LifeStraw bottle. This is typically related to air pressure changes inside the bottle and can happen more often when:

  • the temperature changes significantly, such as when ice is added
  • the bottle is used at higher elevations or during travel
  • the bottle has been squeezed or pressure has built up during use

This behavior can also be influenced by the bottle’s valve design. The bottle uses a one way valve rather than a two way valve. A two way valve may have helped equalize pressure more easily, but we were not able to source a two way valve that met our material requirements without BPA. For that reason, the decision was made to use a one way valve.

Tips to help reduce bubbling or spurting

Pressure changes and altitude

LifeStraw bottles are designed for normal atmospheric conditions. In environments with changing air pressure, such as air travel or higher elevations, the air inside the bottle may expand or contract. This can sometimes cause water to bubble or release unexpectedly when the lid is opened.

Ice or very cold water

Adding ice or very cold water can also create pressure differences inside the bottle. While this is generally not harmful, it may lead to trapped air and cause bubbling when opening the lid.

How to release trapped air

To help reduce pressure before drinking, you can “burp” the bottle:

  1. Fill the bottle partially and tighten the lid securely.
  2. Turn the bottle upside down so the filter is at the top.
  3. Gently tap or shake the bottle to help move trapped air.
  4. Slightly loosen the lid to release excess air, then tighten it again.
  5. Turn the bottle upright and test the flow.

If the issue continues, it may be helpful to avoid overfilling the bottle and to open it slowly after major temperature or elevation changes.
