LifeStraw Escape - no water flowUpdated 17 hours ago
Why is no water coming from my LifeStraw system?
No water flow may be caused by an incorrectly positioned valve, a loose screw inside the on/off valve, an airlock, a clogged filter, or a filter that is not fully installed.
Follow the steps below in order. If the system still does not produce water, stop troubleshooting and contact LifeStraw Customer Service.
1. Confirm that the valve is fully open
Turn the on/off valve counterclockwise to the fully open position.
A partially closed valve may restrict or completely stop water flow.
2. Check the screw inside the on/off valve
A loose screw inside the valve may prevent the valve from opening correctly.
- Remove the valve from the unit.
- Remove both filters.
- Turn the valve counterclockwise to the fully open position.
- Locate the screw inside the valve.
- Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to tighten the screw.
- Do not overtighten it.
- Reinstall the valve and filters, then test the system again.
3. Test the valve without the filters
This step can help determine whether the issue is with the valve or one of the filters.
- Remove both filters.
- Reinstall the valve.
- Add water and open the valve.
If water flows: The valve is functioning, and one of the filters may be restricting the flow.
If water does not flow: The valve or another part of the system may require replacement.
Do not drink water that has passed through the unit while the filters are removed. This step is for troubleshooting only.
4. Test each filter separately
If water flows when both filters are removed, reinstall and test one filter at a time.
- Install the carbon filter only and test the flow.
- Remove the carbon filter.
- Install the membrane filter only and test the flow.
This can help identify which filter may be restricting the water.
5. Check that the filters are installed correctly
Remove and reinstall each filter, making sure that:
- Each filter is fully inserted.
- The seals are clean and properly positioned.
- No packaging, protective covering, or debris is blocking the connections.
- The filter housing and valve are securely attached.
6. Check for trapped air
Air trapped inside the filter or system may temporarily prevent water from flowing.
Make sure the system contains enough water to fully cover or engage the filter. Gently reposition or tilt the unit to help release trapped air, then reopen the valve.
7. Could a dry membrane filter cause low or no flow?
A membrane filter that has dried completely after being used may be difficult to rehydrate and may experience reduced or no flow.
Follow the storage and priming instructions provided for your specific LifeStraw product. Storage requirements vary by product and length of storage.
Do not assume that every LifeStraw membrane filter should be stored wet. Refer to the product manual or the LifeStraw Help Center for instructions specific to your system.
When should I stop troubleshooting?
Please contact LifeStraw Customer Service if:
- Water does not flow when both filters are removed.
- The valve screw is secure, but the valve still does not release water.
- A new or replacement filter does not resolve the issue.
- The valve appears damaged, cracked, or difficult to turn.
- The system has been tested multiple times without improvement.
We may request photos, proof of purchase, the product batch information, or the return of the unit for inspection. Depending on the purchase location and warranty eligibility, replacement or return options may be available.
