Recommendation for Emergency FiltrationUpdated 2 months ago

It's great that you're planning ahead for your family’s safety in the event of a natural disaster.

For emergency preparedness for a family of 6–8 over the course of a week (for drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene), we recommend one of our high-capacity, no-electricity systems designed specifically for low-resource or off-grid environments:

LifeStraw Community

  • High-capacity purifier
  • Filters bacteria, parasites, viruses, and microplastics
  • Ideal for group settings—provides up to 26 gallons (100 L) of safe water per day
  • Note: Does not include carbon filtration (does not remove chlorine, taste, or chemical contaminants)

LifeStraw Mission

  • Portable gravity system with ultrafiltration
  • Removes viruses, bacteria, parasites, and microplastics
  • Available in 5L or 12L sizes
  • Easy to transport and hang; ideal for camping or mobile response
  • Also does not include carbon filtration

LifeStraw Max

  • Best suited for high-volume use in emergency settings
  • Offers ultrafiltration + activated carbon
  • Use with a pressurized water system (tap, water pump or gravity system)
  • Filters up to 1,000 gallons per membrane and 26 gallons per carbon filter

Replacement Filter options:

Each system is long-lasting, but for a 6–8 person household and a full week of use, we suggest:

  • 1 unit of any of the above systems
  • 1 replacement membrane filter (optional for backup—each system lasts thousands of liters)

These units are designed to last through multiple emergency events. For the Community or Mission- if you want added protection against chemicals, taste, and odor, you could supplement with a LifeStraw Home Dispenser or Pitcher, which includes carbon filtration, for drinking water once the microbial threat is addressed.
