How to Store Your LifeStraw Peak Series StrawUpdated 2 hours ago
To help maintain filter performance during storage, avoid letting the membrane dry out completely. Storing the filter with a saline solution helps maintain the hydrophilic properties of the membrane and may also help prevent mold or algae growth during long term storage. If the membrane dries out completely, it can be difficult to get water to flow through again.
Regular Cleaning and Storage
For storage less than 1 month
If you have already used your LifeStraw Peak Series Straw and plan to store it for less than 1 month:
1. Backwash the filter
Blow air through the mouthpiece to help clear excess debris from inside the filter.
2. Rinse the caps
Rinse both the top cap and bottom cap before putting the straw away for storage.
3. Optional disinfection
For optimal disinfection:
- Mix 1/4 teaspoon household bleach with 1 to 2 cups of water.
- Dip the filter into the bleach solution far enough so that the end is submerged.
- Blow into the filter several times to push and pull the solution through.
- Rinse with tap water.
4. Store properly
Place the cleaned filter in a cool, dry place until next use.
Long Term Storage
For storage greater than 1 month
If you plan to store your LifeStraw Peak Series Straw for more than 1 month without use, follow these steps:
1. Prepare the saline solution
- Fill a reusable container with 2 cups of water.
- Add 1 teaspoon of salt and dissolve fully.
2. Fill the filter with saline solution
- Open the bottom cap.
- Take a few small sips of the salt water until the solution reaches the top mouthpiece.
- Close both caps to prepare for storage and hold the saline solution inside.
3. Store properly
- Place the water filter straw into a reusable container.
- Store it in a cool, dry place.
Before Using Again
When you are ready to use the straw again:
- Blow any remaining saline solution out of the filter.
- We recommend spitting out the first few sips of water, as they may still taste salty.
Helpful Reminder
If storing for more than 3 months, the instructions recommend cleaning with a diluted bleach solution before storage for increased disinfection.
