How to Store Your LifeStraw Escape FilterUpdated 2 hours ago

For storage of less than 1 month:

  1. Backwash the unit after your last use.
  2. Empty any remaining water using the drain plug.
  3. You may leave all filters inside the device.
  4. Leave the lid off so the unit can dry.
  5. Store in a dry area that will not reach freezing temperatures.

For storage of longer than 1 month:

  1. Complete the backwashing procedure.
  2. Remove the tap and filter assembly.
  3. Disassemble the filters, discard the carbon filter, and drain any remaining water from the tank.
  4. Reassemble the filter housing without the carbon filter and close the tap.
  5. Fill the tank with about 5 gallons of clean water.
  6. Mix in 1 teaspoon of unscented household bleach.
  7. Reattach the lid and filter about 3 gallons of bleach solution through the unit, leaving the ultrafilter covered in solution with at least 1 inch of water above the filter.
  8. Store in a cool, dry area with the lid closed.
  9. Do not store in freezing temperatures.

To resume use:

  1. Drain all bleach solution.
  2. Remove the filter assembly and rinse the ultrafilter in safe water for about 1 minute.
  3. Insert a new activated carbon filter and reassemble.
  4. Fill with 5 gallons of water and filter the full batch to rinse the system.
  5. This rinse process takes about 15 minutes.
