How to Store Your LifeStraw Escape FilterUpdated 2 hours ago
For storage of less than 1 month:
- Backwash the unit after your last use.
- Empty any remaining water using the drain plug.
- You may leave all filters inside the device.
- Leave the lid off so the unit can dry.
- Store in a dry area that will not reach freezing temperatures.
For storage of longer than 1 month:
- Complete the backwashing procedure.
- Remove the tap and filter assembly.
- Disassemble the filters, discard the carbon filter, and drain any remaining water from the tank.
- Reassemble the filter housing without the carbon filter and close the tap.
- Fill the tank with about 5 gallons of clean water.
- Mix in 1 teaspoon of unscented household bleach.
- Reattach the lid and filter about 3 gallons of bleach solution through the unit, leaving the ultrafilter covered in solution with at least 1 inch of water above the filter.
- Store in a cool, dry area with the lid closed.
- Do not store in freezing temperatures.
To resume use:
- Drain all bleach solution.
- Remove the filter assembly and rinse the ultrafilter in safe water for about 1 minute.
- Insert a new activated carbon filter and reassemble.
- Fill with 5 gallons of water and filter the full batch to rinse the system.
- This rinse process takes about 15 minutes.
