Do LifeStraw Filters Expire?Updated 2 months ago

Membrane filters (unused)

LifeStraw membrane filters do not have a printed expiration date. When stored properly and kept unused, the membrane materials are stable for long term storage. For best quality assurance and traceability, unused LifeStraw membrane filters are intended to be used within about 5 years of purchase. This is a conservative guideline, not a hard cutoff, and it does not mean performance suddenly changes at five years.

LifeStraw has tested representative membrane filters under long term storage conditions and confirmed they continue to meet performance standards for bacteria, parasites, viruses (where applicable), and turbidity after many years of storage.

What about unused carbon filters?

Carbon filters have a shorter recommended storage window than membrane filters because the media and packaging can be more sensitive to storage conditions. Depending on the product, unopened carbon filters are validated for about 2 to 5 years when stored unopened in a cool, dry place.

How should unused filters be stored?

  • Keep filters sealed in original packaging

  • Store in a cool, dry place

  • Do not freeze or expose to extreme heat

Does storage guidance change after a filter has been used?

Yes. The guidance above applies to unused filters. Once a membrane filter has been used, it should be kept wet and stored according to the product instructions, and replaced according to product guidance. Allowing a used membrane filter to dry out can negatively affect performance.
