Cleaning and Maintaining your LifeStraw Peak SoloUpdated 3 hours ago

Regular cleaning and backwashing help maintain flow rate and reduce clogging in your LifeStraw Peak Solo. The Peak Solo membrane microfilter has a pore size of 0.2 micron and lasts up to 2,000 liters / 500 gallons.

How to Use

  1. Prepare for use by first filling any large mouth waterbottle  or pouch with water. *can also be attached to some 28 mm threaded PCO standard bottle
  2. Remove the bottom cap and thread the filter tightly onto the bottle.
  3. Open the top cap to expose the mouthpiece or water outlet.
  4. Filter water by squeezing the bottle to apply pressure into another container, or by using the mouthpiece to drink directly from the filter.
  5. Close the top cap when finished.

Backwashing

We recommend backwashing your filter after each day of use to help maintain flow and reduce clogging.

  1. Remove the bottom plug cap and the top cap from the mouthpiece completely.
  2. Thread on the included backwash syringe.
  3. Submerge the bottom of the filter into drinking water.
  4. Pull water up through the filter by pulling the syringe upward until the syringe is full.
  5. Push water back through the filter by pressing the syringe downward until the water is pushed fully out the other side.
  6. Repeat several times.
  7. When finished, remove the syringe.
  8. Replace the top cap and mouthpiece assembly by screwing the top cap back onto the device.
  9. Attach the bottom plug cap.

Monthly Cleaning

If your Peak Solo has been in regular use, clean it monthly as follows:

  1. Add 1/4 teaspoon of household bleach to 2 cups of water.
  2. Use the syringe to pull the bleach solution through the Peak Solo according to the backwash procedure 5 times.
  3. After that, pull chlorine water 1 more time.
  4. Close the bottom plug and connect the syringe.
  5. Close the mouthpiece and top cap.
  6. Let the unit rest for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  7. After resting, repeat the backwash procedure 5 times with clean water to wash out the chlorine.

Tips

  • Test your gear before you go.
  • If flow slows down, use the backwashing instructions to help remove possible air bubbles or debris from the membrane.

Important Care Notes

  • Never use the Peak Solo to filter seawater or chemically contaminated water, including water from mining tailings ponds or from near large agricultural operations.
  • Rinse out the gravity bag and neck cap with safe water before first use.
  • Do not drop or place pressure on the product in any manner.
  • Do not use if the plastic is cracked.
  • Do not use or expose it to extreme heat above 140°F / 60°C or freezing temperatures below 32°F / 0°C
