Cleaning and Maintaining your LifeStraw Peak Series StrawUpdated 2 hours ago

Regular backwashing and routine cleaning help maintain flow and reduce clogging in your LifeStraw Peak Series Straw. The filter should only be used for filtering water. It should not be used to filter seawater or chemically contaminated water.

Daily Use

  1. Open the top cap and take 5 quick, strong sips to get water flowing.
  2. After drinking, regularly blow air through the filter to help keep it clean and prevent clogging.
  3. Close both caps when not in use.

Optional Use with a Standard Water Bottle

  1. Unscrew the bottom cap of the straw.
  2. Fill the water bottle with source water.
  3. Screw the bottom of the straw onto the bottle.
  4. Squeeze water through the straw.

Optional Use with a Gravity System

  1. Attach the hose to the bottom of the straw filter.
  2. Open the cap.
  3. Allow water to flow out of the mouthpiece.

Routine Cleaning

1. Backwash after use

If you have already used your straw and plan to store it, backwash it by blowing air through the mouthpiece to help clear excess debris from inside the filter.

2. Rinse the caps

Rinse both the top cap and bottom cap before putting the straw away for storage.

3. Disinfect when needed

For optimal disinfection, especially when storing for more than 3 months, follow these steps:

  1. Mix 1/4 teaspoon household bleach with 1 to 2 cups of water.
  2. Dip the filter into the bleach solution far enough so that the end is submerged.
  3. Blow into the filter several times to push and pull the solution through.
  4. Rinse with tap water.

Helpful Tips

  • If you have difficulty drawing water during first use, open the bottom cap and let the straw sit in water for 20 seconds to help hydrate the filter.
  • If flow becomes slow, blow air through the mouthpiece to help remove possible air bubbles in the membrane.

Important Care Notes

  • Do not drop the product or place pressure on it.
  • Do not use the filter if the plastic is cracked.
  • Do not use or expose it to extreme heat above 140°F / 60°C or freezing temperatures below 32°F / 0°C.
  • This product should only be used for filtering water.
