General FAQ | Are your products recyclable?
Thank you for your interest in the materials used in LifeStraw products. We’re committed to using high-quality, BPA-free, food-grade plastics across our entire line. Below is a general guide to the types of plastics and their corresponding recycling codes used in various LifeStraw products:
LifeStraw Personal Straw
- Housing: Polypropylene (#5)
- Membrane: Hollow fiber (not assigned a plastic code; enclosed in PP)
2. LifeStraw Go Series Bottles (Plastic versions)
- Bottle: Tritan™ or AS plastic (food-grade, BPA-free, often not marked with a recycling code, often group #7 (other))
- Cap & Filter Housing: Polypropylene (#5)
- Silicone mouthpiece: Silicone (not assigned a recycling code, not recyclable curbside)
- Silicone base: Silicone (not assigned a recycling code, not recyclable curbside)
3. LifeStraw Peak Series Collapsible Bottles
- Flexible body: Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), does not carry a standard resin code
- Cap & filter housing: Polypropylene (#5)
- Membrane: Hollow fiber, not recyclable
4. LifeStraw Home Pitchers & Dispensers
- Glass Pitcher (7-cup): Borosilicate glass with AS plastic reservoir (no code)
- Plastic Pitcher (7- and 10-cup): BPA-free Tritan™, usually marked as plastic #7 (other)
- Filter housing: Polypropylene (#5)
- Carbon + Ion Exchange Filters: Outer housing is PP; internal media is not recyclable
- Silicone base: Silicone (not assigned a recycling code, not recyclable curbside)
5. LifeStraw Community / Max / Family Filters
- Housing: High-density polyethylene (HDPE, plastic #2) or polypropylene (#5)
- Filter Media: Hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes (not recyclable)
Key Notes:
- All plastics are BPA- and BPS-free, and selected for food safety.
- Not all components carry visible resin codes, particularly internal parts.
- Filter elements (membranes and carbon media) are not recyclable due to contamination and composite materials.
