How do I protect myself during a boil water advisory if I don't have a LifeStraw product?

If you do not have LifeStraw or other tested method for microbiological filtration that meets NSF and EPA standards, it is recommended by the CDC to use bottled water or boil tap water for drinking. Always be sure to follow the guidance from your local public health officials.

Boil water instructions:

If the water is cloudy:

Filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel, or coffee filter OR allow it to settle.

Draw off the clear water.

Bring the clear water to a rolling boil for 1 minute (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for three minutes).

Let the boiled water cool.

If the water is clear:

Bring the clear water to a rolling boil for 1 minute (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for three minutes).

Let the boiled water cool.

Once the water has been boiled, you can cover it and put it in the refrigerator for later use. As long as the water is protected from contamination, it will stay safe to drink.
