LifeStraw Peak Series | Peak Filter is performing slowly
Under normal conditions, the average initial filtration rate for the Peak Series Squeeze filter is approximately 2880 ml/min +/-30% (about 97 oz/min) when pressure is applied using the squeeze method. However, it’s normal to experience a slower flow if the filter is paired with the carbon filter attachment, as this adds a second layer of filtration designed to improve taste and reduce chemicals.
To help restore optimal performance, we recommend the following steps:
1. Backwash the Membrane Filter
- Detach the microfilter from the top cap
- Use the included backwash syringe with clean water
- Draw water into the filter and push it back through several times
2. Disinfect (Recommended)
- Mix 1/4 teaspoon of household bleach with 2 cups of water
- Use the syringe to pull and push the solution through the filter
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water
3. Rehydrate the Filter (If Dried Out)
- Soak the filter in a saline solution (1 teaspoon of salt in 2 cups of water)
- Store it in an airtight container for 24 hours
- Backwash again with clean water before use
4. Optional Tip (Unconventional but Effective)
Some users have found success restoring flow by using a small amount of clear alcohol, such as vodka, as a backwash solution. It can help dissolve oils or other organic residues that might be clogging the membrane. If you try this, be sure to rinse thoroughly with clean water afterward to ensure all alcohol is removed before use.
If you’ve tried these steps and the filter still isn’t performing as expected, please let us know. We’re happy to continue troubleshooting or look into a warranty replacement if applicable.
