LifeStraw Escape | Long-Term Storage and Cleaning

If you plan to store your device for longer than one month without use, please follow the instructions below. This process will disinfect your filters and help maintain optimal performance for future use.

Backwash Procedure

Backwashing should be performed each time you finish using your purifier before storing it, or if you notice a reduced flow rate during use. If using highly turbid water (with a lot of sediment or debris), you may need to backwash more frequently.

  1. Fully depressurize your device by pulling the pin on the pressure regulator valve, located on the top of the lid. Then unscrew the top lid assembly.
  2. Ensure the filter is completely submerged in water, with at least 1 inch of water above the filter.
  3. Thread the included backwash syringe onto the tap of the device.
  4. With the tap in the open position, pull back on the syringe plunger to draw water through the filter. Then push the plunger to send water back through the tap and filter.
  5. Repeat this process at least five times to remove any debris from the ultrafilter.
  6. After backwashing, unscrew the drain plug at the base of the tank to empty any remaining water. Leave the tank open (without the top lid) to allow it to dry internally.

Storage Instructions

  1. After completing the backwash procedure, remove the tap and filter assembly from the tank. Disassemble the filters, discard the used carbon filter, and drain any remaining water from the tank.
  2. Reassemble the filter housing without the carbon filter, and close the tap.
  3. Fill the tank with approximately 5 gallons of clean water and mix in 1 teaspoon of unscented household bleach.
  4. Reattach the lid assembly and filter approximately 3 gallons of the bleach solution through the system, ensuring the ultrafilter remains submerged with at least 1 inch of water above it.
  5. Store the unit in a cool, dry area with the lid closed. Make sure the storage location does not reach freezing temperatures, as freezing will damage the filter.

Resuming Use

  1. Discard all bleach solution from the tank using the drain plug.
  2. Remove the filter assembly and rinse the ultrafilter thoroughly in clean water for about 1 minute.
  3. Insert a new activated carbon filter into the housing, then reassemble the full filter assembly and reattach it to the tank. Ensure the tap is in the “closed” position.
  4. Fill the tank with 5 gallons of water and apply pressure to push the water through the system. This final rinse process takes approximately 15 minutes and ensures the filters are fully flushed and ready for use.
  5. Your tank is now ready for regular operation.
