Calcification in Boiled Water
The white particles and increased calcification you’ve noticed are likely due to mineral deposits from hard water, which contains minerals like calcium and magnesium. These minerals can precipitate, especially when the water is heated, such as in a water boiler.
Our filters, including the activated carbon and ion exchange filter, are designed to target contaminants like heavy metals (e.g., lead, mercury) rather than general minerals such as calcium and magnesium. The filter's selectivity is based on the affinity of various cations to the adsorbent material, and heavy metals have a much higher affinity compared to common minerals. Therefore, dissolved calcium and other similar minerals can pass through the filter and may precipitate later, especially when water is exposed to air during storage.
To help address this issue, please ensure your LifeStraw filters are correctly installed and replaced according to the recommended schedule. If the problem persists, you may want to use water with lower mineral content or consider a water-softening solution.
