How to store and clean your Personal LifeStraw

Thanks for reaching out! If you’ve already used your LifeStraw Personal Water Filter and plan to store it for more than one month without use, here’s how to keep it in great condition:

1. Disinfect the Filter

  • Mix ¼ teaspoon of household bleach with 2 cups of clean water.
  • Close the bottom cap and open the top cap.
  • Pour the bleach solution into the straw through the mouthpiece, then close the top cap.
  • Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Open both caps and rinse under clean tap water for 1 minute.

2. Soak in Salt Solution

  • Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 2 cups of clean water.
  • Close the bottom cap.
  • Pour the salt solution into the straw through the top until full.
  • Pour any remaining solution into a reusable bottle or container.
  • Store the LifeStraw in the salt solution with both caps open.

3. Store in a Cool, Dry Place

  • Keep the container holding the salt water and LifeStraw in a cool, dry location until you're ready to use it again.

4. When You're Ready to Use It Again

  • Blow out any remaining salt solution from the straw.
  • Fill with your usual water source.
  • Discard the first few sips, as they may still taste salty.

Why Use Salt?

Storing the filter in saline solution helps keep the membrane moist and prevents clogging, preserving the filter’s performance over time.
