LifeStraw Home Microfilter Membrane | Why has my LifeStraw Membrane Microfilter become clogged before the end of the filtration cycle?
Clogging can occur due to improper backwashing, cleaning, storage, trapped air bubbles, etc. It's important that the membrane filter stay hydrated and does not dry out.
The membrane microfilter lasts up to 264 gallons and is based on a variety of factors including water turbidity, care and maintenance.
Here are a few steps to restore flow:
- Rinsing: Regular rinsing helps clear trapped debris and air pockets. We recommend doing this during your weekly cleaning.
- Proper Storage: If the filter dries out completely, it can take more effort to rehydrate and may even need to be replaced. Soaking it in clean water for 30 minutes can help.
- Cleaning: If the filter has been used with turbid or mineral-heavy water, it may need a deeper clean.
If after this, you are still not seeing flow, it may mean that you need to replace your filter.
Long Term Storage
One of the best ways to prevent clogging is to follow our long-term storage instructions. This prevents the membranes of our filters from drying out and/or becoming blocked over long periods of non-use.
1. Discard Water
Empty any remaining water from the pitcher or dispenser.
2. Remove Carbon Filter
Take out the carbon filter and let it air-dry for 30 minutes.
- If storing for longer than two months, we recommend disposing of the used filter and replacing it with a new one when you're ready to use the system again.
- If storing short-term, place the dry filter in a sealed, reusable container and store in a cool, dry place.
3. Remove Membrane Filter
Remove the membrane microfilter and rinse it under clean water.
4. Clean the Pitcher/Dispenser
Wash the pitcher body and filter housing with soap and water. Let dry completely before storing.
5. Disinfect the Membrane Filter
Mix ΒΌ teaspoon (1.25 ml) of household bleach with 2 cups (473 ml) of clean water.
- Place the membrane filter in this solution for 10 minutes.
- Remove and rinse thoroughly under clean water for 1 minute.
6. Soak in Salt Solution
Mix 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of salt in 2 cups (473 ml) of clean water until fully dissolved.
- Immerse the membrane microfilter in this saline solution.
- Store in a sealed container in a cool, dry place with the filter fully submerged.
7. Store Separately
- Keep the membrane filter in the saline solution.
- Store the dry carbon filter in a separate, sealed container.
8. Resume Use
When you're ready to use the system again:
- Remove the membrane filter from the salt solution and rinse under clean water.
- Reassemble the pitcher or dispenser with the filters.
- Run two batches of water through the system and discard the first batch, as it may taste salty.
- If stored longer than two months, use a new carbon filter.
