How can I get rid of chemical taste in my LifeStraw filter or purifier?
- Some customers may notice a plastic-like taste when using a new filter, and this can happen for several reasons:
- Residue from Manufacturing
New filters may have residual materials or oils from the manufacturing process. These can sometimes impart a plastic-like taste or odor.
Skipping the Initial Rinse
Many filters require an initial rinse or flush to remove loose particles and manufacturing residues. If this step is skipped or not done thoroughly, it can result in an off-taste, including a plastic-like flavor.
Off-Gassing from Plastic Components
Plastic parts of the bottle, filter housing, or casing may release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when new. These compounds can sometimes affect the taste of water, particularly with freshly manufactured items.
Environmental Factors
- If the filter or bottle was stored in a hot or humid environment, the heat can intensify the release of VOCs, amplifying the plastic-like taste.
- Residue from Manufacturing
How to Remove the Plastic Taste:
- Flush the Filter Thoroughly
Follow the user guide to flush the filter before first use. For most LifeStraw products, this involves running clean, potable water through the filter for several minutes to clear out any residual materials.
Soak the Filter
Submerge the filter in clean, cold water for 12–24 hours. This can help remove any lingering plastic-like taste.
Use a Vinegar Solution (Optional)
- Mix 1 part white vinegar with 4 parts water.
- Flush this solution through the filter to neutralize any lingering odors or tastes.
- Afterward, thoroughly rinse the filter with clean water to ensure no vinegar taste remains.
- Flush the Filter Thoroughly
- After rinsing, backwash the filter using the backwashing procedure.
