Why Does My New LifeStraw Product Have a Plastic or Chemical Taste?

Some customers may notice a plastic-like or chemical taste when using a new LifeStraw filter, bottle, or dispenser for the first time. This is common and usually temporary.

Common Causes

1. Manufacturing Residues

New filters and plastic components, especially those made from TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane), may have harmless residues from the production process that affect taste.

2. Skipping the Initial Rinse

All LifeStraw filters should be flushed thoroughly before first use to remove fine particles and residual materials.

3. Off-Gassing from Plastics

New plastic parts can release vapors (VOCs) that impact taste. This is common in freshly manufactured items and usually fades with use.

4. Environmental Conditions

If your product was stored in a hot or humid space (such as a warehouse, garage, or delivery truck), this can intensify plastic odors and flavor.

5. Water Sitting in TPU

When water remains in TPU materials (used in some LifeStraw components) for extended periods, especially in warm temperatures, it can absorb more of the plastic taste.

How to Remove or Reduce the Taste

Flush the Filter Thoroughly

Run clean water through the filter for several minutes before first use, following your product’s user guide.

Soak the Filter

Place the membrane filter in clean, cold water for 12–24 hours. This hydrates the filter and can help reduce any initial taste.

Optional: Vinegar Rinse

  • Mix 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts clean water
  • Flush this solution through the filter (membrane only, not carbon)
  • Rinse and backwash thoroughly afterward to remove any vinegar residue

Treat TPU Parts

  • Rinse with warm water
  • Soak overnight in a mix of water and either baking soda or lemon juice (be sure to remove the filters first!)
  • Rinse well before use

Use Regularly

The plastic taste usually fades after several uses. Using your product consistently helps flush out residuals.

Use with a Carbon Filter

Pairing your system with a carbon filter (available in many LifeStraw products) helps reduce chemical taste and odor from VOCs and PFAS.
